Announcing the Comeback of NaBloWriMo!

Roughly 954 years ago, my beloved Amy started up a blog-writing event modeled after NaNoWriMo, which is a dealio in November that you sign up for to finish a novel in a month.  (I've signed up twice and NEVER finished my novel, which isn't to say that it won't work for you, provided you aren't a giant sack of novel-writing sloth like I am.)  Anywhooooooo, Amy founded NaBloWriMo (National Blog Writing Month), and put out some feelers about it and about a hundred or so bloggers signed up to be part of it and we all followed each others blogs and wrote almost every day and it was a bunch of fun and created a lovely little community the members of which still hang out on Facebook.

Ohhhhhh, Facebook.

Blessing and curse, wrapped all into one.  That's what Facebook is.  It creates communities AND creates rifts in families.  It connects us to people and soaks up all of our quiet time.  It encourages us to write giant paragraphs about politics, pie, or flowers in our backyards while our novels sit twiddling their thumbs and gathering dust.

Facebook ate NaBloWriMo.  I really believe it did.  And, lately, I've been feeling the tug of the blog again.  I think it's because our political landscape is a giant, bog-filled desert of gloom.  Or because the breezes are turning cool in the morning and making me thing of autumn.  Or, you know, just because.  Not EVERYTHING has to have a reason.  Maybe this is just a whim.  I AM pretty whimsical.

I have decided to wrestle NaBloWriMo from the gullet of Facebook, clean out the corners of this blog, and put out the call that we are back in business starting October 1st.  That gives you a whole month and some change to get your mess together so that you can feel free to carve an hour out of each day to devote to writing with a purpose, which is something from which a lot of us have fallen away.

The "rules" have changed, because I recognize that so much of the social media we love is sucking the creative juice from us like so many digital vampires AND because I know we're all busy AND because I am not sure I'll be able to write every day and, really, I'm just giving myself a break.  I'm giving you a break, too.  Breaks for EVERYBODY!!

Anyway, here are the deets, y'all.  (That means details.  I'm just telling you this because I watched a few minutes of the VMAs last night and realized that I am basically old as the hills.   Ancient.  We're talking a completely out of the loop Methuselah.)  

  1.  Go to the NaBloWri FB page (oh, the irony) and follow us!  Shoot me an IM to let me know that you'd like to sign up to write a bunch of blog entries for the month of October.  I'll add you to a note that will give us all links to our fellow bloggers so we can follow each other easily.  I recommend adding the links to your blogs as a list so that your readers can also share in the fun.
  2. Grab a button or two from the Dropbox folder I'll be adding soon.  The buttons I'm designing for this year are tending toward the cozy, whimsical, watercolor-y side, so if you'd like something more simple or modern or, you know, cooooool, let me know and I'll see what I can come up with.  You can use these buttons on FB, on your blog, in Instagram or Twitter.  I mean, technically, I guess you could print them out and use them as templates for new tattoos.  I wouldn't do that, but, hey.  This is a judgment free zone.  (Psych!  It's TOTALLY a judgment-laden zone.)  (I'm just being honest.)
  3. Plan out what you want your blog to be when it grows up.  This is assuming it isn't grown up, and by that, I mean:  decide what your blog is.  I am firmly of the mind that half of the reason blogs fail is because we can't figure out where we want to go with them and they peter out.  Like, you start off as a Mommy blog and then your kids get past the Mommy stage and you don't feel comfortable writing about puberty and all the weirdness that comes with it.  Or you're just going to use it as an online journal and you realize that you really have a lot of boring thoughts in your head and then you get panicky and self-conscious about it and you don't write because, as you know, we are all judging you.  Or you want to use your blog to earn some extra money and you wind up thinking about what you're going to do with the pots of cash coming in (from...where again?  How exactly did you monetize that sucker?) that you fail to post more than once every couple of weeks.  I...I could be projecting.  My point is, have a plan:  


    As you can see, this is not, um, much of a plan.  It's pretty loose and my handwriting is deteriorating to the point that I'm pretty sure I won't be able to read it soon, BUT it is the first part of the basic theme for me.  I'll be adding to that theme and coming up with some topics I'll be covering during the month of September.  (AGAIN, you have a whole month to get this stuff figured out.)
  4. Aim for writing fifteen blog entries.  Why fifteen?  Because that's half of 31 (ish) and because, again, we're trying to go easy on us.  Basically, you'll be writing a post every other day, which might seem daunting if you haven't been blogging a lot (or at all) lately.  Also, if you blog for fifteen days...
  5. You'll be entered into a pool to win some prizes.  I'll be spending September gathering them together, but I know I'll be adding a Barnes and Noble gift card to the mix.  If you're a business person who has an item you'd like to donate, or if you'd like to add something to the pot, let me know.  PLEASE NOTE:  do NOT tell me that you're going to donate a prize and then fail to follow through.  Sorry to get huffy, but that is SUCH a drag.  The more donations we get, the more likely you'll be to win one.  (If you write every day, we'll give you three entries, provided that we get at least 31 donations.)  
Okay, that's it for now.  I'm sure I'll have more things to add as time goes on, including but not limited to a: my philosophical musings on the importance of writing and community, b:  entry suggestions, c:  tips for blogging success.  If there's anything else you'd like to know, give me a holler.  

That's Southernese for "please email me or message me."  Just keeping you on your toes.  Or on your fingertips, which is probably more apt.  But, honestly, that metaphor fails.
